Founded in April 2008, Hides Gas Development Company (HGDC) is the umbrella Representative Landowner Company for PNG LNG operations within the Southern Highlands and Hela Provinces, representing 13 landowner companies in the region.
Since its inception, HGDC has supplied ExxonMobil PNG Limited (EMPNG) with skilled labour in civil construction, catering and security services – employing over 3000 Papua New Guineans at the peak of PNG LNG’s construction.
With the support of EMPNG, HGDC made a smooth transition from construction to production operations and continues to flourish, now employing over 400 Papua New Guineans.
HGDC are transforming their company to achieve sustainable growth by focusing on supplying production related services to EMPNG, expanding their services into road maintenance, diversifying their client base and areas of operations and providing dividend support to their shareholders.
Adjusting from construction to production was one of HGDC’s biggest challenges, however with the support of EMPNG they were able to adjust their operations accordingly and today have a stronger and more capable landowner company.
EMPNG has helped HGDC develop new growth by expanding their services into production, supporting the hire of new company leaders and helping HGDC to create new partnerships with companies owned by Alaskan Natives with over 40 years of experience in the oil industry and very similar in mission to HGDC.
These engagements provide HGDC the ability to add new service offerings, diversify business opportunities, increase local and national hire, enhance workforce development and deliver sustained economic outcomes to HGDC shareholders.
The PNG LNG funded IBBM Enterprise Centre has been instrumental in supporting the development of HGDC through the provision of business training and mentoring for staff and directors.
Sharing their success with communities is a priority for HGDC and its landowner companies. The company works closely with community leaders to donate books to schools, fund students to attend university and assist in the construction of classrooms, teacher’s houses, churches and health care centres.
HGDC are proud to have worked with EMPNG from the start of construction to the first shipment of LNG. They look forward to supporting EMPNG in the future as they aim to expand into a national company, with a goal to one day compete on a global scale.
